Solo Album and other projects:
Lions was my first solo album that I recorded in 2009. The material includes 7 original instrumentals, 4 vocal tunes. The songs range from traditional to progressive, and reflect where I was musically at that point. One of the reasons I love this project so much is that some of my closest friends played and sang their butts off. It features Andy Thorn- Banjo, Bobby Britt- Fiddle, Russell Johnson- Tenor/Lead Vocal, Charlie Rose- Bass, Jeff Stickley- Guitar. I played guitar, mandolin, and sang lead on Please Be My Love and Piedmont Foothills. Another note about the album is that it was recorded at the Rubber Room which happens to have quite a few pre-war Martin guitars on hand. I recorded with a 1934 D-18 (my favorite), 1936 D-28, 1937 D-18 shaded top, and my own 1956 D-18. In the August 2010 edition of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, editor Dan Miller stated, ”If you want to hear some great old guitars played expertly, I highly recommend Lions.”
The Big Fat Gap is a band that I was fortunate to play with throughout my college years in Raleigh, NC. The band is based in Chapel Hill so I became quite familiar with the stretch of I-40 between there and Raleigh. The Big Fat Gap are still going strong and has included some great pickers including John Garris, Rex McGee, Jason Shore, Andy Thorn, Charles Humphries, Bobby Britt, Michael Holland, and Rick Hauchman. Miles Andrews has been driving the train since the get-go. I played mandolin, guitar, and sang tenor vocal on this record.
Russell is one of the best! Thrilled to have worked on this project with one of Bluegrass Music’s most recognizable tenors.
Fiddle record I was glad to be a part of.
I was lucky enough to produce this project and become friends with this really cool group of people. I think I did a good job cause this album got them a contract with Rebel Records and a big shot producer for their next album, my former bandmate, Travis Book!
